HM Sultan Brunei Presented 1,738 Houses to Citizens

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, consented to present house keys to the 1,738 recipients under the National Housing Scheme (RPN) and Landless Indigenous Citizens Housing Scheme (STKRJ) for the Brunei-Muara District yesterday.

Upon arrival at the International Convention Centre, His Majesty was welcomed by Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Suyoi bin Hj Osman; Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Awg Othman; and Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer, Awang Misle bin Hj Abd Karim.

The Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer in his speech, following the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, noted that the National Housing Scheme continues to develop and is enjoyed immensely by all citizens and residents of the country.

His Majesty consented to personally present the keys to recipients, a great honour that proved very meaningful to the new home owners. His Majesty’s consent to granting these houses portrays His Majesty’s sensitiveness and care towards his subject’s welfare.

On behalf of the citizens, Awang Misle further pledged that society would continue to stand strong and support His Majesty’s enduring kindness.

The ceremony yesterday saw His Majesty consenting to present keys to 1,116 RPN recipients, where 351 received ‘Karamunting Kodok’ houses and 31 recipients were granted terrace houses in RPN Meragang.

In RPN Tanah Jambu, two people received semi-detached houses and 14 received terrace houses, while in RPN Kg Panchor (Mengkubau), 546 received semi-detached houses and 172 received terrace houses.

Under the SKTRJ scheme, eight people received semi-detached houses and 559 received terrace houses in Kg Mata-Mata (Katok ‘B’) and the remaining 55 received terrace houses in Kg Lugu.

The housing project in RPN Kg Panchor, which His Majesty consented to visit after the ceremony, is under the administration of the Brunei Economic Development Board and was handed over to the Ministry of Development in May 2014 following its completion the month before.

At a total cost of $388 million, RPN Kg Panchor measures 309 hectares in size and consists of 4,000 houses, where 2,400 units comprise terrace houses and the remaining being semi-detached units.

Covering an area of 121.5 square-metres, every semi-detached and terrace house in RPN Kg Panchor features three bedrooms, a bathroom and kitchen.

Facilities at this area include roads, drainage system, water tanks, plantations, fibre-optic telecommunication system and a recreation park.

To date, the Housing Development Department have allocated a total of 20,250 houses to applicants who qualified for them.

RPN’s objective is to provide houses for citizens who do not own land and since 1984, the Ministry of Development has provided 27,000 houses nationwide. Of this number, 21,526 houses were built at the RPN area and 6,120 houses built at the STKRJ area.

According to the Department of Housing Development, their target is to develop another 2,000 houses of which 758 units are scheduled to be completed this year and another 1,300 in 2016.

RPN will always be an important part of the agenda and plays a vital role in shaping the nation’s housing industry and upgrading the quality of life for citizens and residents.

On my recent blog on Brunei's Time Line , one commentator got carried away and she started to talk about events in the past before moving on to nicknames. I enjoyed what she wrote and I offered for her to write a whole blog about it and I will put it up. But up to now, I have not received anything from her. Pulau Cermin - Brunei's Historic Island

Since I was already on the water visiting the Jong Batu at one end of the Brunei River, I thought I might as well go to the other end and visit the other historical site of Brunei, Pulau Cermin. Pulau Cermin as many Brunei historians know it is the site of the temporary palace of Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin, the 13th Sultan of Brunei and is the site of the only civil war in Brunei History. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin took the throne after assasinating Sultan Muhammad Ali.
