THREE youths and one association were honoured yesterday for their excellence and significant contribution towards the development of youth in the Sultanate during the 10th National Youth Day celebration held at the Indoor Stadium, Berakas.

The Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT) received the Youth Association Award for its dedication and key contributions to the community. Established in 2013, SCOT is an organisation with the mission of being a catalyst for creating sustainable strategies to help the underprivileged by providing them with assistance in the form of resources, basic skills and other support to help them move out of the vicious cycle of poverty.

SCOT has been initiating various programmes towards eradicating poverty in the country. The association uses several platforms and creative approaches, particularly in the field of education, environment conservation and fund raising to help the needy.

SCOT Acting Chairman Khairul Azmi gin Haji Salleh said, “We feel humbled by this award and it is a milestone for the society. This will motivate our committee members to venture into more sustainable projects in the future”.

NURLIYANA FATIN BINTI ARIFFIN, who won the Meritorious Youth Volunteer Award, has been active in voluntary activities for society that reflect her courage and personality, indeed making her an icon for youth in the nation.

Through her efforts with entrepreneurship as her background, Nurliyana has successfully showcased the project, the Asean Young Professional Volunteer Corp (AYPVC), as its project manager. She and her colleagues managed to set up a school in Cambodia with the aim of helping the children there to have proper education opportunities.

DATIN HAJAH SITI HAJAR binti Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof was selected as the Meritorious Youth Leader for her dedication and commitment towards youth associations. She has held several significant positions in prominent organisations such as Red Crescent Association, PERTIWI Association and Council of Women of Brunei Darussalam.

Datin Hajah Siti Hajar joined the Red Crescent Association back in 1960 as an 11-year-old. She was also part of a number of committees that was set up locally and abroad for youth development.

She was instrumental in drafting the Red Crescent Constitution for the local chapter which helped the Brunei Red Crescent Association become Red Crescent Association to become a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Geneva, Switzerland back in 1997.

Through her active participation in voluntary activities, Datin Hajah Siti Hajar has made significant contributions to inspire the youth of the country.

GOH KIAT CHUN, popularly known as Wu Chun, is one of the most successful figures among youth in the country. The highly-spirited international celebrity of Brunei is committed to promoting the Sultanate globally. He was recently appointed as Royal Brunei Airlines’ (RB) brand ambassador and since then tourist arrivals to Brunei have more than doubled. Being an international artist in the music and film industry and a successful entrepreneur made him the perfect choice for the Excellent Youth Award.

Having a family legacy in entrepreneurship, Wu Chun indirectly provides employment for many youths and contributes to the economy. As a famous figure in the country and an idol of fans, his promotional campaigns for a healthy lifestyle have been inspiring plenty of youths.

Speaking to the Bulletin, Wu Chun said he didn’t expect to be nominated and that it motivates him to keep on doing community- and youth-based work.

“I want to be more involved in reaching out to the children in Brunei as well as the youth as I think education is very important and if they get it right then their future will be more secure.

“Never be afraid of failures – that is my advice to the youth. If you want to be successful you have to take the risk, you might fail, but you have to keep trying and learn as much as possible from your mistakes and share what you have learnt. When I learn something I have the urge to share with others, this has a huge effect,” he concluded.
