The Churchill Museum

Remember this? I have posted several photographs from this defunct museum. The most memorable was this statute in front of the museum.

If you go in to the museum, there was a button which when you press, you will hear the late Sir Winston Churchill speaking in the British Parliament: "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in Gods good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

I am not an anglophile but neither am I an anglophobe, call me weird, I missed that museum.

call me the second weirdo. just wished that museum were not torn down. :( so much memories during childhood. mum..dad.. used to brought us there.. uhuhuhuhu

Seems a shame to have torn down a museum that our late Sultan Hj Omar Ali Saifuddin built for Bruneians and (presumably) generations of Bruneians.

Now, only those of us old enough to remember, have the memories.

Whenever our family travelled from Seria to Bandar (we called it Brunei in those days) and had the opportunity, for sure we would visit Churchill beside visiting our relatives in Kampong Ayer. Pressing buttons here and there listening to the audio, watching the fishes were enough to make us curious about marine life. Do you notice that the plant infront of the statue also making the "V" sign?

Does anybody know what happen to all those materials at the memorial. I always visited the place while on my trip to the Dewan library. I missed the aquarium and the underground office. The design, construction and finishing quality of the building was unique and of high standard. Look at the buildings they build now. Eg new Pusat Sejarah extension, just look at the windows (ugly). Look at the Bandar street lamp posts, they are over crowded and over size

Quite agree with the earlier comment on the declining quality of design and architecture in BSB. Contrast the new block (Adat Istiadat Offices?) with the adjoining the Lapau and the Old Legislative Council, there was an elegance and proportion to the old building which is lost on the new one.

Speaking of the Churchill Memorial, does anyone know where the statue has gone?

Family Titles in Brunei

On my recent blog on Brunei's Time Line , one commentator got carried away and she started to talk about events in the past before moving on to nicknames. I enjoyed what she wrote and I offered for her to write a whole blog about it and I will put it up. But up to now, I have not received anything from her. Pulau Cermin - Brunei's Historic Island

Since I was already on the water visiting the Jong Batu at one end of the Brunei River, I thought I might as well go to the other end and visit the other historical site of Brunei, Pulau Cermin. Pulau Cermin as many Brunei historians know it is the site of the temporary palace of Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin, the 13th Sultan of Brunei and is the site of the only civil war in Brunei History. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin took the throne after assasinating Sultan Muhammad Ali. It was quite a bloody time in Brunei history and I remembered one classic book written by Yura Halim entitled "Mahkota Berdarah" regarding the episode.
