WITH the current economic challenges affecting many countries around the world including the Sultanate, Bruneian people need to commit to self-development, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam said in a titah yesterday.

“There is nothing more important than resilience, as an investment for the future, while measures for economic diversification must be continued without prejudice to the country’s existing resources,” His Majesty emphasised in the titah delivered during the Investiture Ceremony which was held as part of the monarch’s 69th birthday celebration.

“One of the most important aspects that should be possessed is our ability to seize opportunities that normally come only once and seldom recur. If we do not seize them, we will be left behind,” His Majesty said.

“It must be remembered that our vision is to preserve what we have now to ensure that it can be enjoyed by the future generation,” which His Majesty considered as one of the noblest of intents.

The issue of unemployment in the country again became among the main focuses of the monarch’s titah.Similar to His Majesty’s previous titahs that emphasised the need for the public to consider private sector employment, the monarch urged the public to change their mindsets and lessen their dependence on the government.

His Majesty noted that the availability of work opportunities is still within reach and it is up to job seekers to pursue such prospects especially within the private sector which are mainly taken up by foreign workers while locals are still adamant to work for the government.

“This is among the obvious weaknesses that we need to improve upon,” His Majesty said, adding that such weakeness stem from attitudes towards employment that could potentially hinder the country’s development.

“It is therefore clear as to what is important, that Brunei must change its mindset from waiting to working hard; from being too reliant to making an effort and; from being too dependent to being independent,” all of which said His Majesty, “are our sources of strength”.

The public sector, said His Majesty, must also take steps in strengthening administrative accountability with the hope that such a move can inculcate a ‘performance culture’ in the said sector.

Being members of the international community, His Majesty said that the people of Brunei must also face the socio-political, socio-economic and socio-cultural challenges and changes that others around the world are also confronting and it is the citizens’ duty to overcome these obstacles with patience and mindfulness with emphasis that measures should be taken through the Bruneian way.“If we are to take action then take action the way we normally would. We must think the way Bruneians think without mimicking others. What is important is that we overcome the impacts of changes and challenges with realism and pragmatism and ensuring that all that we do is strong and stable.

“If we plan, that plan must be supported by a skilled and competent human resource to enable us to reap its benefits to the fullest.”

On Brunei’s role in international affairs, His Majesty reassured that Brunei will continue to foster and strengthen relations as well as cooperation with other nations through, but not limited to, the country’s membership in regional and international organisations.

With Brunei also having interests in regional and international safety, His Majesty also noted that the country has also lent helping hands to victims of humanitarian disasters and those who have been affected by natural disasters in line with the capabilities of the country.

Concluding the titah, His Majesty expressed his gratitude to the people of Brunei, those in the public sector, security forces, those in the private sector and Bruneians working abroad all of whom have contributed to, and have supported, the government.

His Majesty also expressed thanks to members of the National Royal Birthday Celebration Executive Committee and National Executive Committee both on the national and district levels for their services in ensuring that this year’s celebration is a success. “I pray that we, and Brunei Darussalam, continue to live in peace and prosperity under the protection of Allah the Almighty.”
