THE photos on this page are part of the writer’s collection from the 1950s and 1960s that gives a glimpse of how life was like for children growing up in the picturesque water village, Kampong Ayer.
The writer fondly recalls that in the past, mothers living in the water village would spend hours telling folklore stories and singing traditional songs to their children. It is the hope that once their children grow up, they would pass down whatever they know to their sons or daughters.
According to the writer, Muslim parents living in the water village back then would send their children to mosques, suraus or religious halls to learn Muqaddam every Friday morning.
