SEPTEMBER 2, 1967 – Brunei’s Crown Prince, Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah, on Sunday morning unveiled the foundation stone of Brunei’s new youth centre at Kampong Berangan opposite the new Lapau.
The centre is estimated to cost $2 million by completion in 1969.
Its facilities will include an Olympic swimming pool (another public swimming pool in the capital is now nearing completion), a gymnasium, a domestic science block, recreation and dining rooms and
dormitories for boys and girls.
The Crown Prince was met on arrival at the gaily-decorated site by the Commissioner of Welfare, Awang H M Salleh, the Assistant Minister of Welfare and Posts, Pengiran Haji Yusof bin Pengiran Limbang, and the Acting Commissioner for Development, Awang Zakaria bin Haji Sulaiman.
The High Commissioner F D Webber, and the Acting Mentri Besar, Dato Pengiran Haji Mohamed Yusof, had arrived earlier to join invited guests in the two beflagged stands.
The Prince called on the youths of Brunei to direct their efforts and energy to the improvement of the welfare of the people and not to be disheartened by difficulties or even failures. (Unforeseen difficulties had delayed the construction of the centre.)
He said he was pleased to take part in a ceremony for a building that would contribute so much to the youth of the country and would be a milestone in its progress.
