New book chronicles 50 years of Brunei’s development

Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah launched a newly published book titled ‘Kegemilangan Pemerintahan: Kumpulan Artikel Sempena Jubli Emas Pemerintahan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam (1967-2017)’ at the Jawatan Dalam Hall of the Brunei History Centre, Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday. YAYASAN Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah launched a newly published book titled ‘Kegemilangan Pemerintahan: Kumpulan Artikel Sempena Jubli Emas Pemerintahan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam (1967-2017)’ at the Jawatan Dalam Hall of the Brunei History Centre, Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday.

Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman in his capacity as Chairman of the Yayasan Board of Directors, officiated the launch ceremony.

The minister also officially opened the Annual General Meeting of the Brunei History Association (PESEBAR).

The new book was published by Yayasan with coordination from PESEBAR. The 384-page book contains 20 articles written and contributed by members of PESEBAR, lecturers, teachers, higher education institution students, researchers and history enthusiasts.

The publication of the book is a charitable contribution made by Yayasan in line with their establishment mission of supporting research and knowledge enhancement activities in the country.

The book is additionally hoped to serve as reference material for scholars and the general public to gain a better understanding on the development and achievements of Brunei Darussalam during the 50-year reign of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, particularly from a historical perspective.

The book will also be distributed to libraries and higher education institutions in the country.

Dr Rozaiman bin Haji Makmun, a lecturer at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), gave a review on the book.

PESEBAR President Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Yahya bin Haji Ibrahim, Yayasan Managing Director Dato Paduka Eddie bin Dato Paduka Haji Sunny as well as members of PESEBAR and officers from Yayasan were also present.

On my recent blog on Brunei's Time Line , one commentator got carried away and she started to talk about events in the past before moving on to nicknames. I enjoyed what she wrote and I offered for her to write a whole blog about it and I will put it up. But up to now, I have not received anything from her. Pulau Cermin - Brunei's Historic Island

Since I was already on the water visiting the Jong Batu at one end of the Brunei River, I thought I might as well go to the other end and visit the other historical site of Brunei, Pulau Cermin. Pulau Cermin as many Brunei historians know it is the site of the temporary palace of Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin, the 13th Sultan of Brunei and is the site of the only civil war in Brunei History. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin took the throne after assasinating Sultan Muhammad Ali. It was quite a bloody time in Brunei history and I remembered one classic book written by Yura Halim entitled "Mahkota Berdarah" regarding the episode.
