HM Sultan Brunei Visits Schools










His Majesty takes a closer look at education with visit to schools

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, continues to demonstrate commitment in ensuring that students in the country receive quality education by taking the time to inspect the progress of educational institutions in the country.

His Majesty paid a visit to three schools; Anggerek Desa Primary School, Mulaut Primary School and Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre, yesterday.

The first royal visit was to Anggerek Desa Primary School, which currently has 54 teaching staff comprising 39 local teachers and officers, two foreign teachers and 12 relief teachers.

The school has 336 curriculum sessions in the morning and 389 in the afternoon. The school, which currently accomodates 336 students, has 16 classes including two preschool classes with 32 children aged between five and six years old.

The school was established in 1962 and the temporary building was built by the government at a cost of B$3,000.

It was known as Anggerek Desa Malay School.

The first headmaster of the school was Cikgu Asmakhan bin Abdulkhan (1962-1964).

Upon arrival, His Majesty was welcomed by the school’s principal, Cikgu Mardiah binti Haji Wahab, together with teaching staff.

Cheers and excitement filled the air of the school where students and teachers queued up to meet and have their photo taken with His Majesty.

Year 4 students lined–up to greet His Majesty who toured the classrooms.The monarch spent time interacting with students and speaking to teachers on the school’s efforts and progress in terms of teaching quality.

The monarch also signed a plaque to mark the visit to the school.

At the school, the monarch took a closer look at the facilities such as the hall, library, Resources Room, Conference Room, English Room, futsal, netball and volleyball courts, ICT laboratory, Science Room and morning assembly area.

His Majesty also visited two preschool classes – Pra Pelangi Ceria and Pra Bintang.

At Pra Pelangi Ceria, the monarch was greeted by Cikgu Hajah Nurus Syifa Amni binti Haji Besar and Cikgu Izura binti Haji Ismail.

Cikgu Hajah Nurus Syifa Amni informed His Majesty that the class has 17 children aged between five and six years old.

At the class, His Majesty received a pesambah presented by the preschool children.

His Majesty then visited the Pra Bintang class, which currently has 13 children aged between five and six years old.

The monarch was greeted by Cikgu Anissa Rohaidawaty binti Haji Mohd Saini and Cikgu Hajah Siti Nabilah binti Haji Ajimain who explained the various activities conducted in the class. His Majesty also witnessed various school activities conducted by the preschool children outside the classroom and consented to have a group photo taken.

Anggerek Desa Primary School’s vision is to become a quality and effective school and its mission is to provide educational services and high-quality professional support toward effective education. Until now, the school has been led by 16 headmasters.

From Anggerak Desa Primary School, His Majesty continued his visit to Mulaut Primary School in Jalan Mulaut Limau Manis, Kampong Mulaut, Mukim Sengkurong.

Founded in 1969, Mulaut Primary School was first known as Mulaut Malay School. Back then, it had 57 students comprising those in primary one, two and three levels. The school moved to a new site in February 1, 2016.

Currently, the school has 257 students and nine staff members.

The school conducts its primary studies in the morning, while in the afternoon it serves as a religious school.

His Majesty mingled with students and teachers and took a closer look at the school’s facilities including Special Education Needs Assistance centre and the library.

As classroom sessions were in progress, His Majesty made enquiries on the students’ learning process by asking the students questions on the content of various subjects taught and their preparedness for upcoming examinations. His Majesty was keen to listen to students’ views about the subjects studied.

The monarch also engaged with the teaching staff, touching on issues such as the students’ current level of development.

His Majesty then visited Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre, which currently accommodates 621 lower and upper six students and 106 teachers.

Besides touring the school’s compound and inspecting the facilities, His Majesty also witnessed martial arts and traditional games demonstrations by the students.

Teachers, staff and students expressed their appreciation and gratitude for the monarch’s genuine concern for the welfare and education of the citizens of Brunei which was made evident by his visits to the educational institutions.

On my recent blog on Brunei's Time Line , one commentator got carried away and she started to talk about events in the past before moving on to nicknames. I enjoyed what she wrote and I offered for her to write a whole blog about it and I will put it up. But up to now, I have not received anything from her. Pulau Cermin - Brunei's Historic Island

Since I was already on the water visiting the Jong Batu at one end of the Brunei River, I thought I might as well go to the other end and visit the other historical site of Brunei, Pulau Cermin. Pulau Cermin as many Brunei historians know it is the site of the temporary palace of Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin, the 13th Sultan of Brunei and is the site of the only civil war in Brunei History. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin took the throne after assasinating Sultan Muhammad Ali. It was quite a bloody time in Brunei history and I remembered one classic book written by Yura Halim entitled "Mahkota Berdarah" regarding the episode.
