Innovation, digital economy to spur economic growth

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has emphasised the importance of stronger cooperation to promote innovation and the digital economy, key strategies to spur economic growth, which is also one of the key priorities in Asean’s Vision 2025 towards elevating the region up the global value chain.
His Majesty expressed hope for the United States to share its best practises in creating an enabling environment that can nurture the growth of innovation and creativity in the region.
“In this regard, such could be done, among others through the creation of an internship programme for Asean nationals with various US companies as one possible way towards contributing human resource development,” His Majesty said in a titah at the Retreat 1 of the Special US-Asean Leaders Summit held at Great Room, Sunnylands Welcome Centre, Sunnylands Centre and Gardens on Monday.
His Majesty acknowledged that technological advancements are making it easier for businesses, both big and small, to operate globally, and therefore emphasised the importance of promoting greater use and awareness of technology and the digital economy in order to stay competitive in the global economy.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said the arrival of His Majesty at Sunnylands Centre and Gardens for Retreat 1 was greeted by Barack Obama, President of the United States of America.
His Majesty later consented to sign the Sunnylands Estate Guest Book.
Retreat 1 began with opening remarks by the US President as well as Choummaly Sayasone, President of Lao’s People Democratic Republic as Chairman of Asean.
His Majesty’s titah at the Retreat 1 highlighted the topic of ‘Innovation and Digital Economy to Spur Economic Growth’.
His Majesty also expressed happiness with the US’ continued emphasis on strengthening its engagement with Asean.
His Majesty also stressed the importance for Asean and US to discuss cooperation to address challenges facing the global economy, such as declining oil prices and volatilities in financial markets.
